Workshops
Poetry writing, performance prep
The Burning Haibun
Writing workshop (Name it Yourself Festival)
“The burning haibun is an alteration of the
traditional haibun—a Japanese haikai form
originally popularized by Matsuo Bashō in the
seventeenth century;
it is composed of a prose poem and a haiku”
This workshop connects to the group poem
through mastering the practice of releasing control
and ego in your writing. A burning haibun asks
participants to subtract material from their written
work until they’ve filtered their piece down to a
simple haiku. The goal is to practice getting rid of
the “unnecessary” in a poem to become concise.
Page to Stage
Performance Art and Spoken Word Workshop
Page to Stage takes your writing out of your
journal and onto a mic. During this workshop,
participants learn the art of spokenword and
public speaking to evolve their written poem
into an impactful performance.
Soul House ran a “Page to Stage” workshop with
a group of Quest Students studying the “Poetry
in Science” course. Many students had not
shared their work in a public setting, some had
little experience with any public speaking. Our
Quest Students and alumni showcased their
new spokenword talents into a live
performance at The Zephyr Cafe in Squamish.
